Camp Systems - for the Technical Minded

You might ask, for a place so close to nature, how does it get all the amenities of home? The HYDRO SYSTEM consists of 1,100 ft. of 10-inch plastic pipe, run up the nearby hillside to a vertical height of 350 ft. above sea level. The water flowing down the pipe from the waterfall head results in about 150 pounds of water pressure by the time it reaches the camp.

Then, the water runs into a building housing the power turbine. It has a butterfly valve which controls the amount of flow running into the turbine, and subsequently, the amount of power output.

A computer controls the power load, and it is set to maintain 60 cycles. A 5,000-watt heater takes the extra power that the camp is not using. The computer adds or deducts accordingly to maintain 60 cycles, then the heater unit takes any leftover power. So, if you turn a light on in the camp, it turns the equivalent power off the heater, or vice versa.

Whatever would a 5,000-watt heater be used for? Why, a HOT TUB, of course! And at Homathko, it's got to be a hot tub with the most spectacular view in the world! (see picture at left) The hot tub is 12.5 ft wide, 17.5 ft. long, and 6 ft. deep, filled with 7,500 gallons of water. Just perfect after a long day of hiking and fishing!
